Oxycodone vs. OxyContin Introduction There are many different types of pain that affect people in different ways. What works for you may not work for someone else. For this reason, there are many different medicines to treat pain. Oxycodone is a type of pain drug. It comes in the form of immediate liberation and a form of prolonged liberation. The immediate release form of oxycodone is available as a generic medication. The extended-release form is only available as the OxyContin brand medication. This article helps you understand the differences and similarities between these two drugs and how they work. OxyContin is a brand version of the extended release form of oxycodone. These are different versions of the same drug. OxyContin and the immediate release oxycodone belong to a class of drugs called opioids. A class of drugs is a group of drugs that work in a similar way and are often used to treat similar conditions. Oxycodone immediate release and OxyContin join receptors in the brain and spinal cord.
